The early days of students’ tertiary education experiences can be exciting and daunting all at once. While they may be thrilled to begin a new chapter of their lives, adjusting to a new environment is never easy. This is especially so if they are living away from home for the first time.

KDU - 2014 January Orientation Day (6)

In view of the situation, KDU University College recently organised an Orientation Day for its January intake students. Held at its Damansara Jaya campus on 6 January & 7 January, the event was a good mix of serious academic matters and pure lighthearted fun.

The day kicked off bright and early in the morning with the registration of all of the event’s participants, followed by the lively Zumba Hip-Hip Hooray session to get the crowd going about an hour later.

After that, Professor Dr. Khong Yoon Loong, Vice Chancellor of KDU University College, took to the stage to give everyone a warm welcome. He then introduced all of the Schools and supporting units at the higher education institution, as well as those heading them. The respective Heads of Schools themselves took turns to address the students once Professor Khong was done.

Throughout the day, there was a series of icebreaking and mingling sessions for the freshies to make new friends at KDU University College, peppered with briefings by the Student & Alumni Centre, Student Council, Library Department, Teaching and Learning Centre, Information System Department and Health & Wellness Centre.

Other highlights included the Go! Go! CHEER! segment that featured a special cheerleading performance and students being broken down into groups to come up with simple but original cheering chants for their teams!

There was also a talk by a representative from The Royal Malaysia Police on the dos and don’ts for maintaining an environment conducive to learning for all. Furthermore, Hany Cheng, KDU University College’s counselor encouraged students to drop by her office without hesitation should there be anything at all that is troubling them.

To wrap up the event, the sound of camera shutters clicking filled the air during the Snappy Session, giving everyone more than just great memories to take home.
