Scientists of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) received international recognition for their research on probiotics.
Tan Pei Lei and Chuah Lee Oon bested 222 candidates from 24 countries to be among the Young Scientists Awards winners at the International Conference on Beneficial Microbes, which took place in Penang.
Tan discovered a faster way to heal wounds. She discovered a strain that could heal wounds 20 per cent faster when it is applied topically. It took Tan three years to study the different good bacteria in order to find one which could heal wounds quickly.
Meanwhile, Chuah discovered probiotics that are not resistant to antibiotics to produce food that is safer for human consumption. Currently food production and processing involves the use of antibiotic-resistant (AR) probiotics, Chuah hopes that through her research, food producers will alter their ways to produce safer products.
