Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) is a focus area for Malaysia’s national development. Its economic impetus and role in creating a digital-ready and AI-skilled workforce have motivated the government to set a target of a 60:40 ratio of STEM and Arts students.
As a regional engineering and construction company, Gamuda has a hand in shaping engineers and high-skilled labour to meet the demands of a STEM-driven economy.
Since 1996, the Gamuda Scholarship under Yayasan Gamuda has paved the way for exceptional young Malaysians to pursue their studies in various engineering streams, architecture and others, locally and globally, with access to reputable universities the likes of Imperial College London, University of Cambridge, Peking University, Nanyang Technological University, and University of New South Wales.

Worry-free Academic Life
Many students can’t afford their dreams of studying at world-class universities, even when they have successfully secured a place. “I was one of these students, but the Gamuda Scholarship broke those barriers for me and now I am studying civil engineering at Imperial College London,” said Leon Tia Zhao Qian, a 2023 scholar.
Covering full tuition fees, living expenses, accommodation, book and laptop allowances, the scholarship alleviates students’ financial burdens, leaving them free to focus on what truly matters – their studies and campus life.
“Our scholarship programme provides equal education opportunities to B40 and M40 students and those from marginalised communities, transforming their lives,” said Ts. Lim Hui Yan (Gamuda Engineering Deputy Managing Director and Yayasan Gamuda Head).
Lim was a beneficiary of the scholarship back in 2008.
Secure Career Pathways
On top of education access, Gamuda Scholarship secures their career pathways with guaranteed job placements, which include overseas work opportunities, where they can contribute to the Group’s regional projects.
“The clear employment path right after graduation is the most standout aspect. Knowing that I have a job awaiting me after completing my degree provides immense peace of mind,” said 2022 scholar, Dhakchynie Gunalan.
The Taylor’s University architecture student added that the early exposure to the construction industry through her internship at Gamuda has shaped her perspective and career goals even before completing her degree.
Dhakchynie’s (left) hands-on internship allowed her to apply classroom learnings in real-world projects and work alongside industry leaders.
“It is incredibly motivating that many of Gamuda’s senior leaders are former scholars,” chimed in Fahim Mikhail Razak Bin Lokman Razani, a civil engineering student at the University of Edinburgh and 2024 scholar. “This reflects the company’s belief of promoting and nurturing talent from within. I am excited for the future!”
The mentorship and networking programmes connect the students with past scholars, whose experiences provide them with a clearer vision of how they can grow, make an impact and build a future with the company.
“Our workforce benefits tremendously from this ready pipeline of true talent, as scholars have chosen to join the Group upon completing their studies. Today, many Gamuda scholars are helming senior management positions within the company,” said Lim, who was a beneficiary of the scholarship back in 2008.
Holistic Development Beyond Financial Aid
More than just financial aid, the scholarship programme develops holistic, well-rounded scholars and the next generation of leaders.
“I have developed personally through teamwork, learning from others with different backgrounds, as well as discipline and responsibility in maintaining good academic performance, and managing my finances well,” said Izzul Islam bin Junaidih.
The Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTEM) mechatronic engineering scholar of 2024 is eager to apply his knowledge to projects and grow as an engineer. “The opportunity to work with the best in the industry encourages me to improve myself. I’m also grateful to know that my hard work is being recognised and I want to be able to contribute back to the company.”
To date, 763 students have experienced a life-changing journey through the Gamuda Scholarship, opening the door to a brighter future.
