Xiamen University (XMU) has a rich history in marine studies spanning nearly a century and is widely recognized as the cradle of China’s marine studies.

History and Development

• The Department of Oceanography, established in 1946, was the first of its kind in China.
• The College of Ocean and Earth Sciences at XMU has grown into one of China’s top marine research institutions, housing the state key discipline in Marine Science.

• The faculty includes two academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
• Many faculty members are involved in China’s “Thousand Talents Plan”, a global recruitment program for top experts.
• The college hosts state-of-the-art research facilities, including:
  • The State Key Laboratory of Marine Environmental Science

  • Jiageng (嘉庚号) scientific research vessel, equipped with advanced scientific instruments, enabling students to gain hands-on research experience in oceanography since 2016.

China-ASEAN College of Marine Sciences (CAMS) at XMUM

• With strong support from XMU, CAMS was established as the first overseas college of marine sciences at Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM).
• The college is sponsored by the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the China-ASEAN Maritime Cooperation Fund.
• Well-equipped facilities support both teaching and research in marine and environmental science.
• Undergraduate students receive early exposure to practical and research experiences, preparing them for further studies and employment in the field.
